Why do conversations stop when small children are around?
It happened again today. I went out and ended up in a house with four other adults and a small child. The adults lost thier ability to hold down a conversation for any longer than 15 seconds, because after that they all had to sit looking at this small child doing something absolutely wonderful with a cardboard tube. I just don't understand it because small children are just not interesting, and yet people end up just gazing at them with blissed out looks on their faces. I do try desperately to keep the conversation away from the child but usually it's in vain, and if I dare to suggest that the small child is, in fact, about as interesting to look at as drying paint I get shot down with comments regarding my current childless state and that it'll all be different when I have my own. I do hope not...
